What is Chiropractic?
The profession was founded in the U.S. in 1895 and is now established in over 70 countries. There are over 160,000 chiropractic physicians today of which 65,000 or more practice in the U.S. Although chiropractic as a profession is only a little over 100 years old, manipulation has been practiced in some form since the days of the bonesetters.
Chiropractic has a dual value:
In that it overlaps both a wellness paradigm and a sickness/disease-orientated paradigm. This is primarily due to the dual function of the vertebral column:
- Structural/ PROTECTIVE? (Support and protection of the spinal cord)
- Mobility
WELLNESS:
Chiropractic is a health care discipline, which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.
GOALS OF CHIROPRACTIC PRACTICE:
- To meet the patients immediate needs.
- To address the cause of the symptoms by restoring normal ranges of movement and function of the joints, muscles, and other structures of the musculoskeletal system.
- By restoring function to the musculoskeletal system to allow the nervous system to function without interference and better regulate the various body systems and promote general health.
The professional goal of chiropractic is normal function of the neuromusculoskeletal system for the prevention of pain and ill health.
